The Nineties

I had a delightful visit with my cousin and our 99-year-old aunt. She’s not really our aunt…but she’s been a part of the family since before my cousin or I were born so that makes her an aunt in our eyes.

My cousin picked up some Chow Mein and I brought flowers and we set her table – she still lives in her own home – and we enjoyed a meal together and visited. We had a great time. As I was leaving she asked me if I could mail something for her. She handed me an envelope and said it’s to the Publisher’s Clearing House. She’s been trying to win the jackpot for 47 years! So I dutifully put her letter in the mailbox, smiling all the way.

Her longevity reminded me of my grandfather, Charlie. He was 98 when he died. We would go visit him in the nursing home (he became blind so he had to live in a nursing home). We would bring him his favorite…M&M’s. I remember the nurses telling us M&M’s are not good for him because they spoil his appetite. I thought, he’s 98-years-old, if he wants M&M’s I’m happy to bring him some and let him enjoy them!

I wonder what I’ll be like when I’m in my 90’s?

  1. Haha, you’ll be beautiful, sweet, and filled with wisdom, just like these lovely relatives of yours!!! Such neat photos Valerie! I always wonder about what the eyes of more elderly folks, in their 80’s or 90’s, have seen throughout their lives. There is so much depth to their faces, knowing they’ve lived through so much.

    1. I do appreciate having older folks in my life…
but I’m soon getting to be in that category. O my…
But I don’t feel old! HA

  2. On the eve of a planned outdoors visit with my mom, this is exactly what I needed to read. Thank you for sharing the joy you find/found in these seniors.

I think you will remain just as you are now. Sweet. Kind. Compassionate. Caring. I just don’t know which candy is your favorite.

    1. O Audrey, You too sweet. Thanks.
      Almost anything chocolate!
I hope you have a great visit with your mom. I’m so glad you get to see her and visit with her outside!

  3. What fun! How wonderful to have older family members to enjoy and learn from. I can tell how much you enjoy her! We all need to remember how much those who are are elders can offer us. Thanks, Valerie!

  4. So nice of you and Cindy to bring food and flowers and visit with Florence🥰 I am sure she appreciated it👍🤣
All 3 of you looking good🥰
It is amazing thinking that she is 99 years and still living in her home🤣
And I sure agree that you should have the right to eat M&M’s when you are in your 90ties if you want to💃💃👏👏 even though it may spoil your appetite🤪😳
Say hi to Auntie Florence from us the next time you see her🥰
We have spent the weekend with Jomar and Bente at our cabin🤣
So sorry you will not be able to come visit us this year as planned😢 it would have been so much fun but you will have to come when it is safe to travel🥰
    Take care😘

    1. We are mourning the loss of our trip to Norway. We would have left this coming week!
We were talking with Florence about that. She, too, has fond memories of you and said to say hi!
I want to be at your cabin! WE are there in our hearts!
